The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

January 11th, 2009

The Good:

Gilbert Brule has scored his first goal as an Edmonton Oilers on a breakaway tonight against the Blues.  I really like Brule and am confident he will have a long successful career in Edmonton and we’ll see him score many more.

Ryan Potulny has been called up from the Springfield Falcons where he has put up 31 points in 36 games this season.  I expected Potulny to be the replacement for Glencross this season and was surprised that he didn’t make the team out of training camp.

For the first time this season I have seen the Oilers gain momentum in a hockey game as a result of the penalty kill.  Eric Cole in particular has looked really good getting in passing lanes and using his speed to create short handed chances.

The Bad:

Robbie Schremp will not likely play another game with the Edmonton Oilers as long as Craig Mactavish is the head coach.  Mactavish stated publicly that Schremp is too slow and doesn’t win battles.

Its seems to me that MacT has been much too vocal in the media about the players and leads me to beleive he doesn’t know what else to do.  With the new ownership in Edmonton this year I believe the coaching staff and management has been given the season to produce but will be replaced before next season if the teams keeps playing with such inconsistency.

Robert Nilsson is one of the most talented young players on the Oilers and on some nights is the best player on the ice but has been inconsistent early in his NHL career.  He has been bad much more than he has been good lately however and I have to wonder if he is the latest victim of MacT’s inability to coach young offensive minded players.

The Ugly:

Whats ugly is the Edmonton Oilers trying to generate offence without Ales Hemsky.  With all of the scoring depth the Oilers have this season I’m shocked with the difference one player can make.  Without Hemsky the only thing the Oilers are good for is a cure for insomnia.
