Should the Oilers Go For Heatley?

July 27th, 2009

heatley_dany_vert_ap_260Should the Edmonton Oilers even be interested in Danny Heatley? They are offering 3 players in Cogliano, Smid, and Penner who could potentially have breakout seasons under the new coaching staff in Edmonton and will be taking on a contract which will handcuff the team for years to come with the cap expected to go down.  The Oilers would actually be over the cap if they made that trade right now and would still have some unsigned players such as Gilbert Brule and Robbie Schremp and still would not have a good option for 3rd line center who can kill penalties.  At this point I don’t think the Edmonton Oilers have the kind of team that can make the playoffs and if they were to trade for Danny Heatley I still don’t think they will make it.

So with all of the cap issues and the questions about Danny Heatleys character why are the Oilers still interested in Heatley? Well because he’s the exact type of player they have been after for the last few seasons and the opportunity to get a player like Heatley is rare.  They feel that if they can get Heatley they will have the highly skilled lineup required to be competetive and will be able to make the neccassary moves to stay under the cap and fill the hole on the 3rd line and pk.  Of course they would most likely need to trade one of the higher paid D-men such as Vishnovsky or Souray,  but I say go for it.

If they could put Staois in that deal instead of Smid that would be great.
