Good Luck Dick

dtarnstrom_1.jpgThe Edmonton Oilers have traded veteran D-man Dick Tarnstrom to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Rookie Curtis Glencross.  Tarnstrom had been a healthy scratch many times this season but the Oilers will miss the luxury of having a veteran player to step in when key players are injured, which seems to be quite often.  Curtis Glencross is a rookie who does not have much upside and will most likely spend his time in Springfield.  Kevin Lowe obviously didn’t pull the trigger on this trade because he was after Glencross, it is purely a salary dump. The Oilers will pick up the approximate $180 thousand remaining on Glencross but dump close to $800 thousand with Tarnstrom, the question is if Lowe is starting the fire sale to just save money or is he making cap space for a bigger trade.  If Lowe is still hopeful of the Oilers turning things around this season and making it into the playoffs he needs a legitimate first line center more than ever now that Horcoff is injured.

On a side note of this deal it is interesting that Lowe has found another GM whom he can talk trade with.  Scott Howson is the former assistant GM for Lowe and the Edmonton Oilers and now has 2 former Oilers on the Columbus blue line in Dick Tarnstrom and Jan Hejda.  I don’t know if there is another deal to be made between these two but expect that there is good communication and knowledge of what the other may be looking for.

It is interesting, the fact that there is an Edmonton connection; but with Horcoff on the mend, the wrong message is being sent from the oiler management to their fan base. To sell now is a slap in the face. What, for a draft pick you have already bartered away. Winning now at all costs (or die trying) should be the cry.

I would agree, never say die. There is a chance however that this is just to clear up cap room for a bigger move to start a push to the playoffs.

It’s hard to imagine, how people have guts to write comments like that. I would never write anything like this, because I would have thought what other would think of me after that. I know that it doesn’t matter who you are in Internet, you can act however you want, but anyway I would remember that a man should act nice and polite, no matter if he is online or offline
