Flames Slip In The Oil Streak
The Edmonton Oilers scored 3 goals in the second period to come back from a 2 goal deficit and defeat the Calgary Flames for their 4 victory of the season. The Oilers are now 4 – 0 this season and are one of 2 teams that remain undefeated. Sam Gagner and Sheldon Souray were both out of the lineup tonight with lower body injuries and were dearly missed early in the game as the Oilers were badly out played in the 1st period. The great play of Mathieu Garon kept the Oilers within 2 goals at the end of the 1st period in which they were out shot 17 – 3. At 5:34 of the 2nd period Steve Macintyre delivered a huge hit in the corner against Dustin Boyd which prompted Brandon Prust to come to Boyd’s defense. This was the first fight of the season for Macintyre and he did not disapoint as he made short work of Prust. The fight seemed to change the complexion of the game and Ethan Moreau, Fernando Pisani, and Andrew Cogliano scored within the next 7 minutes to give the Oilers a 3 – 2 lead and they never looked back.
Game Notes:
The Oilers continue to improve in the Faceoff circle as they won 60% of their faceoffs which really allowed them to control the game in the 2nd and 3rd period.
In my last article I mentioned that Todd Bertuzzi may finish this season with more points than his team, and I would like to update you all and may keep track of this all season long. So Bertuzzi did score another goal in this game and now has a total of 5 points, the Flames have a total of 3 points.
The best line for the Oilers in this game was Ethan Moreau, Fernando Pisani, and Marc-Antoine Pouliot as they gave the team energy and counted for 2 of the Oilers 3 goals.
The Oilers have now won the first two games of the battle of Alberta which I consider to be one of the keys to the Oilers hopes to reach the playoffs this season.
The number one line of Erik Cole, Shawn Horcoff, and Ales Hemsky continues to struggle early this season as they look to find chemistry with each other. This really shows the depth the Oilers have this season winning their first 4 games of the season with the first line underperforming.
I’m going to finish with another quote but this one isn’t an original as I’ve heard it many times before… not sure who deserves credit for this so lets give it to Wayne Gretzky:
“The Calgary Flames suck.”
The Voice
I don’t know what the coach said to them after the 1st period but they were way better in the 2nd.
The flames do suck. lol.
The Oilers came back strong, on a team that seems to be mediocore at best. We all know the better conference this year is in the east.
